It can happen to anyone, being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As we adjust to the new president, many of us are watching the turmoil from the comforts of our home. But what do you do if you are out running errands and get caught up in a demonstration or civil unrest? Below are a few tips to help keep your family and you safe if that happens to you.
1. Stay Informed
Staying informed of local events, headlines and what is going on is the best way to not get caught in the wrong place. Ignoring what is going on in the world puts your family and you at the greatest risk. Find out what groups operate in your area and follow them on Facebook, Twitter or join their email list so you can have a heads-up on where they are going to be. Being aware of events and hot button issues can lessen your chances of ending up at the wrong place at the wrong time.
2. Don’t assume people or police will be able to help you.
If you are caught in a demonstration, don’t assume that you are going to get help. Law Enforcement Officers may have their hands full or not realize you need help. People in the group or others caught in the cross-hairs may not be concerned with helping you.
3. Blend in
If you can, blend into the group long enough to move to an edge and escape. This includes shouting what they are shouting and looking angry if they are angry. You only need to do this long enough to work to the edge of the group and then leave as soon as possible.
4. Get out of the area and somewhere safe quickly
Getting out of the group as quickly as possible is the best way to keep your family and yourself safe. Even peaceful demonstrations can get violent and escalate quickly. The larger the group, the lower the overall IQ.
These are just a few tips to keep in mind if you are caught in a demonstration. The best way to keep yourself and family safe, is to avoid being caught unaware.
